Why the range is a range
Hyaluronic acid filler is broken down by an enzyme your body already produces, hyaluronidase, and how fast that happens is set by your own metabolism. Metabolic rate varies enormously between people, which is why two patients treated on the same day with the same product can be six months apart at the end.
Movement is the second variable and the bigger one. The more an area moves, the faster the product goes — which is why the lips are the shortest-lived site on the face and a cheek, where the tissue barely moves, routinely holds twice as long. Comparing your lips to a friend's cheek filler tells you nothing useful.
The third is the product. More heavily cross-linked gels resist breakdown for longer but feel firmer, and in a mobile area a firm gel can read as a ridge. Choosing the longest-lasting option is not automatically choosing the best result.
What makes it last longer
Daily SPF. Ultraviolet light degrades hyaluronic acid and ages the skin over it at the same time, and it is the easiest thing on this list to actually do.
Staying hydrated, because hyaluronic acid holds water and a dehydrated result looks flatter than it is.
Not smoking. Smoking affects circulation and skin quality, and in practice it shortens the useful life of filler noticeably.
Topping up before it has gone completely. Treating while some structure remains needs less product and gives a more predictable result than rebuilding from nothing.
What makes it go faster
Hard, frequent exercise. It is a genuine trade and worth knowing rather than resenting.
Heat — saunas, steam rooms and heat-based facial devices over a treated area.
Very high metabolism, which you cannot change and which is not a fault.
Aggressive massage or resurfacing over the area. Tell whoever performs those that you have had filler, and tell me what else you are having.

- Will it come back worse if I stop?
- No. When a treatment wears off you return to your own baseline, not to something worse. What people sometimes notice is that they had become used to the result, so the return to normal registers as a deterioration when it is simply the original.
