How long does microneedling last?

results build for up to 6 months and are held with maintenance

Microneedling makes controlled micro-injuries in the skin to trigger collagen production, treating texture, scarring and fine lines over a course of three to four sessions four weeks apart, with results building for up to six months.

When you see it
glow within a week, remodelling over 8 to 24 weeks
Downtime
redness like mild sunburn for 24 to 48 hours
Sessions
3 to 4, four weeks apart

Why this is measured in cycles, not months

Resurfacing works with your skin's own turnover, which runs on roughly a four-week cycle in younger skin and slows with age. That cycle is why the interval between sessions is what it is, and why the result of one session is a fraction of the result of a course.

The immediate effect — smoother surface, better light — is real and short. The lasting effect is remodelling underneath, which accumulates across a course and continues for weeks after the last session.

So there are two answers: how long the glow lasts, and how long the remodelling lasts. They are different numbers and conflating them is how people end up disappointed at week three.

What makes it hold

A home routine that keeps working between appointments. Retinoid, vitamin C, daily SPF — this is the half that runs 365 days a year.

Completing the course rather than judging it on one session.

Sun protection, which matters more here than almost anywhere else because the barrier is temporarily compromised.

What works against it

Sun exposure in the fortnight afterwards, which can undo the result and cause pigmentation on top.

Picking or exfoliating flaking skin before it is ready.

Stacking treatments too close together, which irritates rather than accelerates.

Common questions

How long does microneedling last?
results build for up to 6 months and are held with maintenance. Microneedling makes controlled micro-injuries in the skin to trigger collagen production, treating texture, scarring and fine lines over a course of three to four sessions four weeks apart, with results building for up to six months.
When will I see the result of microneedling?
Glow within a week, remodelling over 8 to 24 weeks. Judging it before then is judging an incomplete result, which is the most common reason people think a treatment has not worked.
When should I come back for microneedling?
Before it has gone completely rather than after. Treating while some of the result remains needs less product, gives a more predictable outcome and is usually a gentler appointment. If you are unsure, send me a photograph — I would rather tell you to wait.
Will it come back worse if I stop?
No. When a treatment wears off you return to your own baseline, not to something worse. What people sometimes notice is that they had become used to the result, so the return to normal registers as a deterioration when it is simply the original.

Consultations are £30, and that comes off the cost of your treatment if you go ahead. No pressure to book anything on the day — if you are not sure whether you want treatment at all, that is still a good reason to come and talk.
