Microneedling aftercare and recovery
Day by day, what to use and what to leave alone — and why sun protection is part of the treatment.
Microneedling creates thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin. For the first day or so those channels are open, which changes what you should and should not put on your face — and makes aftercare genuinely part of the treatment rather than an afterthought.
The first 24 hours
Expect redness like mild sunburn, warmth and tightness. Use only what you have been given or told to use: a bland moisturiser and nothing else. No make-up, no acids, no retinoids, no vitamin C.
Avoid anything that raises your body temperature — exercise, saunas, hot showers, alcohol. Sweat into open micro-channels is an infection risk rather than merely uncomfortable.
Days two to seven
Redness settles over the first two days. Light flaking or a sandpapery texture often appears around day three and passes within a few days. Do not exfoliate it away.
Make-up is usually fine after 24 to 48 hours once the skin is intact. Reintroduce active ingredients gradually from about day five to seven, retinoids last.
Sun protection is not optional
Broad-spectrum SPF 50 daily for at least two weeks. Freshly treated skin is highly vulnerable to UV, and sun exposure now is how a treatment intended to even out your skin tone ends up causing pigmentation instead.
This matters most for richer skin tones and for anyone treating pigmentation, where the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is real and avoidable.
When to call
Spreading redness, swelling that worsens after day two, pus or discharge, fever, or a cold sore developing. Prompt treatment matters for all of them.

Common questions
- When can I wear make-up after microneedling?
- Usually after 24 to 48 hours, once the skin surface is intact. Use clean brushes or clean hands.
- How long does the redness last?
- Most settles within 24 to 48 hours. Deeper treatment can stay pink a little longer.
- When can I have the next session?
- Usually four weeks apart. Closer than that does not give the skin time to complete the remodelling the treatment triggered.
